Habitual Miscarriage

Various terms are used to describe cases involving repetitive miscarriages. Recurrent spontaneous abortion, recurrent abortion, recurrent pregnancy loss, and habitual abortion are used interchangeably, and the definitions slightly differ based on whether they involve two or more instances, sometimes two or three or more occurrences. Traditionally, it is defined as two or more recurrent miscarriages before the 20th week of pregnancy.

The causes are believed to encompass genetic factors from parents, anatomical anomalies, antiphospholipid antibodies, endocrine disorders, infections, environmental factors, and more. Approximately half of the cases are considered idiopathic. In traditional Korean medicine, recurrent pregnancy loss is metaphorically explained as resembling an immature fruit slipping and falling due to various reasons. The fruit itself may have defects, it might be influenced by external factors, or it might lack proper nourishment from the tree.

For the fruit to mature well, it requires sturdy seeds and suitable soil, defense mechanisms against external stimuli, and consistent nourishment.

Habitual miscarriage, or recurrent miscarriage, is often associated with unclear causes, but ultimately cultivating a healthy body condition is seen as a pathway to treatment. Traditional Korean medicine assists by restoring maternal function to prevent miscarriages.

Post-miscarriage, prescriptions promoting blood circulation and vitality are used to prevent complications. Herbal treatment is usually taken for around 21 to 30 days during this period. Subsequently, a comprehensive approach involving acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal treatment is employed based on external stimuli, lifestyle, and maternal condition to support pregnancy maintenance.

Once pregnancy is confirmed, herbal prescriptions aiding conception are administered. Herbal prescriptions are known to have fewer side effects and higher effectiveness. Clinical study results regarding herbal prescriptions for habitual miscarriage patients are as follows: In a review paper covering 41 randomized controlled trials involving a total of 3660 participants, the group receiving herbal treatment either alone or in combination with progesterone therapy exhibited higher birth rates compared to the group receiving progesterone therapy alone. No significant adverse effects were reported in the herbal treatment group.
