My Recent Weight Loss Journey

My Journey to Healthier Living and Weight Loss

Introduction:
I recently experienced an unexpected weight loss of 8-9 pounds. This change wasn't part of a deliberate weight loss plan but a byproduct of adopting healthier eating habits and lifestyle changes. Here’s how I did it and the benefits I've noticed.

Healthy Eating:
I've always known the importance of eating healthy, especially as I age. However, it wasn't until recently that I systematically began practicing it. I reduced my intake of refined carbohydrates, which I had previously enjoyed, and increased my consumption of high-fiber vegetables and nut proteins. This shift helped me maintain weight loss and improve my overall health.

Intermittent Fasting:
To enhance these benefits, I started intermittent fasting. This approach not only helps burn accumulated energy reserves but also supports gut health. I typically finish dinner between 6 and 7 p.m. and have about two meals a day between 2pm to 6/7pm.

Diet Adjustments:
During this period, I cut out foods fried in oil and those considered refined carbohydrates, such as bread, noodles, high-fructose corn syrup, and sugar. Despite being over 40 and not having diabetes, my A1C and cholesterol levels were rising due to an unhealthy diet. Recognizing this, I took the opportunity to make more concerted efforts toward healthier eating habits.

Current Weight and Maintenance:
My current weight is 138 pounds. Since I don't aim to lose more weight, I've been eating a bit more during dinner and incorporating nut snacks to ensure my body gets the necessary energy. On occasions when I eat an unhealthy diet, I use supplements to manage my blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Functional Medicine Insights:
In my practice, I encounter many female patients receiving functional medicine treatments who face chronic diseases and weight gain due to poor cortisol metabolism. For these patients, it’s crucial to control food intake without excessive stress, ensure proper sleep, and include light snacks. Stretching exercises can also aid in managing metabolism.

Age-Related Metabolic Issues:
As we age, metabolic problems become more prevalent for both men and women. High stress and poor cortisol metabolism can lead to thyroid dysfunction and hormone imbalances, complicating weight loss efforts. Functional medicine tests and treatments can identify and address these issues effectively.

Conclusion:
Healthy eating and lifestyle adjustments have significantly impacted my health, and I encourage others to consider these changes. Functional medicine offers valuable insights and treatments for those struggling with metabolic issues, particularly as we age.
